Timeless kitchen essentials every home needs
In this blog post i am going to share with you my essential kitchen items that every home should have. These items are the staples to creating amazing meals and a pretty kitchen! ✨
My favorite room in any house is always the kitchen. In my home the kitchen is my ‘office’. It is where i make meals to nourish my family and the place that i feel most creative. I am just obsessed with it and everything in it.
I am not much of a shopper, but when i know i need to buy something for my kitchen, i turn into a shopping expert. Please tell me i am not the only one that gets so excited to try new kitchen things?! I once bought a waffle maker and woke up early to make waffles for an entire week!
With that being said, there are a few items that i feel every kitchen should have. Like kitchen staples that are the basis of every good meal. I always feel that when you are surrounded by things you love it just makes life that little bit special. It just makes me feel so happy!
I also love the thought of having kitchen items that i can pass down to my children. Things that hold value and memory. I also like them to be made of non toxic materials with as less plastic as possible. Not only will they last longer, but they are better for your health and wellness.
One: A good quality Dutch oven
A Dutch oven is one the most hardworking pieces that you can have in your kitchen. I use mine almost everyday. From baking loaves of sourdough to roasting a chicken, the possibilities are endless.
This one is a bit of a splurge but i can promise you that if you choose quality over anything, you will definitely get your money’s worth. I personally love Le Creuset, but Cuisinart have amazing ones too. The color options are also endless so you will be able to find one that fits your personality and style.
This is definitely something that can stay within a family for generations!
Two: Beautiful mixing bowls
Growing up my family had these beautiful Mason Cash mixing bowls that i was obsessed with. When we moved to Canada from the UK, we ended up leaving them there and i was devastated when i found out that no one packed them. I love a good quality ceramic mixing bowl. I never use plastic ones because they contain micro plastics, and metal ones are great for things like mixing a salad, but there is something that is so special about a ceramic mixing bowl.
A beautiful mixing bowl sitting on your counter instantly adds warmth and character to your kitchen. Hopefully it will also make you feel inspired and excited to cook! (It does for me anyway)
Three: Wooden kitchen tools
Wooden kitchen tools such as mixing spoons and spatulas, never go out of style. They also add s earth tones to every kitchen which is very grounding.
Unlike trendy kitchen gadgets that come and go wooden tools, with proper care, can last for years.
They are perfect for stirring sauces, mixing dough, cooking family meals, and serving beautiful dishes.
Four: Linen kitchen textiles
Linen tea towels, aprons, and cloth napkins add softness and elegance while also being incredibly practical.
A beautiful linen towel hanging from your oven door or a well-loved apron worn while baking creates that feeling of a home that is cared for. I still have my grandmas linen apron that i still use to this day!
I also love a good quality linen tea towel for covering dough that is proofing and drying dishes. I like to change mine with every season to keep things fun around here!
Five: Good knives
A must have in every kitchen is a good quality set of knives. From chopping vegetables for a nourishing dinner to preparing fresh ingredients for a weekend meal, the right knife becomes something you reach for every day.
They will also be one of the best investments you make in your kitchen. Again, just like the Dutch oven, they are on the higher price side, but i have gotten cheaper ones before and they do not last as long.
Six: Glass storage containers
I will admit when i first saw people buying flour already in a bag, and then emptying into a glass container, i didn’t really see the point. And then i tried it! I just love how getting flour out of a pretty glass container feels.
It also really helped to keep bugs and other things out of ripped bags. I am not going back!
Glass jars and storage containers are not only practical but also beautiful. They allow you to see what you have while creating a clean and organized look.
Store pantry staples such as:
Flour
Rice
Pasta
Nuts
Grains
Baking ingredients
There is something satisfying about opening a pantry filled with beautiful, organized ingredients ready to be used.
Seven: A beautiful cutting board
A quality cutting board is more than just a kitchen tool. It can become part of your kitchen decor.
A large wooden cutting board can be used for preparing meals, serving snacks, displaying fresh bread, or styling your countertop. They really have many uses!
Choose one made from durable wood that will age beautifully over time.
Eight: Classic dinnerware
Using beautiful dishes everyday is a game changer for romanticizing your everyday life.
The way we serve food is how you experience it. So you can make a regular Tuesday night dinner feel that extra bit special when you eat it from a dish you love.
Remember, don’t just use your fancy plates for a special occasion, you are the special occasion.
Nine: Reliable bakeware
I have been there, i have had a drawer filled with mismatched measuring cups some with missing handles. I kept them because they just made do at the time. Then i realized that the things i kept were linked to my self worth and how i felt about me. Keeping these broken items fit in with my then narrative that i wasn’t worthy of the better quality things. So if this is you, invest in some good bakeware that you don’t have to keep replacing over and over again. Weird example, but you get what i am saying!
A timeless baking collection might include:
Measuring cups and spoons
A rolling pin
Baking sheets
Pie dishes
Cake pans
Mixing bowls
A pastry brush
Baking connects us to tradition. It reminds us that creating something with our own hands is a form of care.
Ten: Pots and pans
When you are on the market for some good, long lasting pots and pans, opt for stainless steel and avoid the ones that say ‘non stick’. The non stick pans are usually coated with chemicals and i feel that they change the taste of food.
I also would suggest some cast iron pans to make everyday things like eggs.
Your collection should always include pots to boil things in, and skillet pans to sear meats and make pancakes. Also a few sizes of frying pans to make large and smaller meals is a must.
Again, stainless steel pans are an investment but you will get so much use out of them.
