10 Cozy homemaking habits that make your home feel peaceful
There is always so much happening in the world that we can’t control. The world feel rushed and heavy right now. We can however, control how the energy feels in our home and i am going to teach you how.
What mornings look like for me!
Many women, like me, are rediscovering the beauty of slowing down and creating a peaceful home. Homemaking isn’t about perfection, it is about building a space that nurtures you and your family, and brings calm to your everyday life.
Small habits practiced daily can help you completely transform how your home feels. All you need a few cozy homemaking rituals.
Start your morning with a gentle reset
The tone of your home often begins within the first few hours of the day. Have you ever noticed how if your morning is rushed and chaotic, the rest of your day seems to feel rushed and chaotic? Or if the first thing you do in the morning is check your phone and see something negative, you carry those feelings throughout the day?
So, instead of rushing to check your phone, or even going straight into getting ready, begin the morning with a gentle reset.
Open the curtains and let in natural light. Make beds, do a quick tidy of the kitchen, start a pot of coffee or tea and put on some calming music. These small actions will help you start off your day in the right energy.
When my children were in public school, i would wake up and hour before them to have one hour before myself. This helped me to wake them up in a gentle loving way, instead of being frantic and feeling stress.
A peaceful morning might include:
Opening windows for fresh air.
Journaling.
Making beds and fluffing pillows.
A 10 minute grounding meditation.
Wiping down the kitchen or throwing in a load of laundry (this always makes me feel productive and then i find the rest of my day is)
Lighting a candle while having your morning drink.
When the day begins with calm, the entire household often follows that rhythm.
Keep a simple daily cleaning rhythm
A peaceful home doesn’t mean a spotless house. Instead of deep cleaning constantly, which can make you feel burnt out, focus on small daily tasks that keep things running smoothly.
As a homemaker, i find that creating simple rhythms work best. For example:
Monday: Laundry and floors.
Tuesday: Bathrooms.
Wednesday: Laundry and kitchen reset.
Thursday: Decluttering and bedroom cleaning.
Friday: Living room tidy.
I love to spread out my tasks throughout the week. This prevents me from feeling overwhelmed and stops that ‘cleaning never ends’ feeling.
Create cozy corners in your home
I actually learnt this from my children! They take one corner of their bedroom, put either a comfy chair or some fluffy pillows, some soft blankets, and then after a long day or when they need a break, i will find them there with a book.
Taking small breaks throughout the day is so important. You should be taking them in places that feel like a hug to your nervous system.
Examples of cozy corners include:
A reading chair and soft blanket.
A window seat with plants.
A tea or coffee nook in the kitchen.
A spot on the couch where you can meditate or journal.
Bring nature indoors
Nature has a calming effect on the mind and body. Bringing elements of the outdoors inside can instantly soften the energy in your home.
So much of the home decor around these days is made from plastics and materials that give off harsh chemicals in the home. This really isn’t good for us to breathe in and be round daily. Nature and natural materials will always be best.
Simple ways to add nature include:
Fresh flowers
Indoor plants
Natural materials like wood, linen, or cotton
Beeswax candles
Opening windows
Light candles or use soft lighting
Lighting plays a huge role in how your home feels. Bright lights can sometimes feel harsh, while soft lighting creates warmth and relaxation.
I recently added lamps to the corner of my living room and bedroom. In the evenings, instead of turning on the main lights, i use the lamps. It completely changed how i relaxed i feel.
Bonus tips: Did you know that eating with candles on can help lower stress levels in both adults and children. Try this if meal times are stressful in your home.
Practice a five minute evening reset
One of the best homemaking habits is doing a quick reset before going to bed. This actually helps the next morning feel smoother. Spend just five minutes tidying the main areas of your home.
Your evening reset might include:
Loading the dishwasher
Folding blankets and fluffing pillows in the living room
Putting away one load of laundry
Putting away stray items
Waking up to a tidy home will help lower your stress.
Fill your home with calming scents
Scent is closely tied to memory and emotion. When your home smells comforting, it will feel more welcoming.
Some cozy scent ideas:
Non toxic vanilla or cinnamon scented candles
Simmer pots on the stove
Essential oil diffusers with lavender or lemon essential oils
Baking something yummy like bread or cookies
Keep surfaces simple and uncluttered
Clutter creates visual noise and stress. It can make the most beautiful home feel chaotic. Keeping surfaces relatively simple helps maintain a peaceful atmosphere.
Limit decorations on:
Kitchen counters
Coffee tables
Entryways
Bed side tables
Create small daily rituals
These are more for you than your home!
Some ideas:
An afternoon tea or coffee
Watching a show while folding laundry
A warm shower or bath
Making time to sit down and eat proper meals
Focus on atmosphere, not perfection
In my opinion, the most important thing about homemaking is remembering that peace at home isn’t about perfection.
Real homes have life like toys on the floor, laundry waiting to be folded, and dishes in the sink. What matters most is the feeling in your home. By focusing on how your home feels rather than how it looks, will create more peace in your mind. It will then become a place of comfort for you and your family.
